Coach reminder

LISTEN → SUPPORT → ADJUST → SIGNPOST → NEVER DIAGNOSE.

Before and during coaching

  • Use ordinary, non-embarrassed language if periods are mentioned.
  • Ask what would help instead of assuming what an athlete can or cannot do.
  • Protect privacy; do not discuss a participant’s period with others without an appropriate reason.
  • Allow reasonable toilet/welfare breaks within the session format.
  • Consider long-day factors such as toilets, travel, heat, clothing, food/water access and waiting time.
  • Do not assume menstruation means worse concentration, mood, strength or performance.
  • Do not tell an athlete to “push through” significant pain or symptoms.
  • Do not require cycle tracking, period dates, app screenshots or detailed bleeding information.
  • Do not diagnose period pain, heavy bleeding, irregular/missed periods, REDs or another condition.
  • If symptoms are concerning or affecting daily life, encourage appropriate healthcare support.
  • For girls, keep conversations age-appropriate and follow safeguarding procedures if wider concerns emerge.
  • Challenge teasing, shaming and period-related bullying.

Useful language

Say

“Is there anything that would help you take part comfortably today?”

Avoid

“You’re on your period, so I won’t expect much today.”

Say

“You don’t need to give me medical details — tell me the practical adjustment you need.”

Avoid

“What day of your cycle are you? Show me your app.”

Boundary

Coaches support participation. Healthcare professionals diagnose and treat health conditions.
